The Bernard Chesneau "Ski With Passion" newsletter.
Bernard Chesneau, Managing Director / Instructor at Mountain Masters Ski School in Val d’Isère France.
How happy would you be if you could ski any slope with unstoppable confidence, total balance and complete control?
Would you be satisfied with that?
I am going all out in this newsletter, no more subtle allusions here and there to get the message across to timid readers. The message is clear; I can really help you become the skier of your dreams provided you are willing to understand certain rules. The same rules used by great masters. Welcome to Ski Mastery.
Ski with passion has evolved into in Ski Mastery and this is Ski Mastery Newsletter Issue 1. Because ‘Mastery’ is the issue, let me tell you a story from a great master illustrating this perfectly.
Everybody is familiar with the great Bruce Lee. Perhaps the greatest Martial Arts Master that ever lived. He was also a great teacher and very often people would come to him and say ‘could you tell us Master how we could be a great Martial Artist like you’. Now he would take them to a gym and he would go through some of his moves. What he was doing was trying to find out where they were. He said, ‘most people have the wrong information about Martial Arts’, (just like people have the wrong information about skiing). After he had taken them through the little exam he would sit down at a table (with a glass of coke and a glass of water) and he’d put in front of them the glass of coke and say: ‘I want you to look at that coke and let it represent your knowledge…this is what you know to be the truth’. And he said, ‘I want you to let this clear water represent what is the truth…this is my knowledge, this is what I have learned’ and ‘this is what you want from me’. Then Bruce said; ‘I can’t give you my knowledge because you see, there is too much of yours’, however he said, ‘if you are prepared to let go of yours and make room for mine, then we can work together. But as long as you hold on to this (the coke) I can’t give you this (the water)’.
What a great story! Bruce Lee being the master that he was did something remarkable. He set the story straight with his pupils…I cant give you my knowledge until you let go of yours. Think about it, are you prepared to let go of what you know? Are you ready to make room for my knowledge? Because if you are then Ski Mastery is specially designed for you. Ski Mastery will turbo-charge your skiing with fresh thinking combined with powerful actions.
How does Mastery work?
Mastery has nothing to do with your present skiing standard, nothing at all, a beginner for example could, after five minutes of skiing be using the principles of mastery, and mastery is about aligning yourself with the universal laws for the purpose of skiing. Think about how happy you would be if you could ski any slope with unstoppable confidence, total balance and complete control?
I am telling you it is possible, you just need to apply the laws in the same way as the masters do.
Masters obtains their power from the understanding of universal laws and they align these laws to their advantage using four components.
Component 1: Thoughts.
The thoughts running through your head as you are standing on top of that icy mogul hill are setting the scenario of your descent.
Masters create their own thoughts of confidence, balance and control.
Component 2: Words
The words that you spontaneously express as you are standing on top of an icy mogul field will reflex into your performance.
Common Examples:
‘It looks difficult’ or ‘I’ll never make it alive’ or ‘here goes nothing’ or ‘disaster city here I come’ or ‘no man’s land’ or ‘you call this a holiday’ or ‘bloody hell’… you get the idea.
Masterful point of view:
‘This looks easy’ or ‘a walk in the park’ or ‘piece of cake’ or ‘I’m going to crack this stuff’ or ‘hang in there’ or ‘wonderful’ or ‘magnificent’…
Masters use words of confidence, balance and control.
Component 3: Action.
Actions show what your skiing is really like. Actions express the result of your thoughts plus your words.
Masters act with confidence, move in balance and embody complete control.
Mastery is achieved by learning how to move you mind before moving your body.
First you put your thoughts in order, and then you act. Think about it, how can you experience skiing with confidence if your thoughts are not aligned on confidence, balance and control. Where are you going to get the control from? Where are you going to get the balance from? Where are you going do get the confidence from?
Before thinking that you are doing wrong moves, before thinking that your ski technique is inadequate; ask yourself how good is your technique for dealing with your emotions because it is your emotional performance that creates your real life skiing technique. Not the other way around.
It is my sincere conviction that more often then not, everyone takes their thoughts for granted…never giving them a second thought. Mastery starts by applying refined thinking techniques to skiing and this is why it is so powerful.
Component 4: Balance
Mastery is achieved by removing "balance wounds" from your body
As Ski Mastery Specialists we have found that skiers are suffering from ‘balance wounds’ before skiing begins because their equipment throws them out of balance. So we have developed a way to restore your balance using our sophisticated alignment techniques and we do this prior to getting you on the mountain in any ski equipment that you have or hire. If you have already been aligned you get updated automatically.

Moving towards Mastery is:
Homework
Final Note:
Ski Mastery is the natural evolution of my constant quest for wanting to do things in a better way. Ski Mastery captures the dormant excellence within each of us and awakens it. We started out with Bruce Lee and we end with Albert Einstein who observed "The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them". Isn’t this newsletter about changing your level of thinking…Do you now understand how you are going to crack this sport once and for all?
